I just watched it, and here's my problem with that argument.
First I'll say that I agree with the argument. Some people will have advantages that they did nothing themselves to earn, and because of those advantages they will have a head start if they choose to take advantage of it. (Not all do as we know). But I can accept this opinion as fact.
To which I say...so what? My children are growing up with far more advantages than I had. I grew up with far more advantages than my parents had. My parents grew up with faaar more advantages than my grandparents had.
Isn't this the idea??
WHY the F are we trying negate all of the hard work that I and many before me have done to provide my kids these advantages? It's the whole friggin point if you're a parent....to leave our kids a little better off than we were, to teach them a little more than our parents taught us, so that they can accomplish things that were perhaps we were not (if they so choose). Who doesn't want to provide more opportunities to their children to find success and happiness than they had themselves?
Everyone, no matter their race, wealth, or even god-given talent, can do this. They make their ambition to leave their children a little better off than they were. Everyone can start this right now, no matter how "disadvantaged" they are. The advantages they speak of were ALL earned by someone, if not the direct beneficiary. No, it's not always easy, and no it won't always be fair. It never has been, nor does it need to be.
I'll defer to Clint Eastwood, who tells it like it is here...
